The Festive Season
It´s that time of year again, when the clocks turn back, the days are shorter, that chill is in the air, and everyone is snuggled beside the fireplace to stay warm.
This is also the time when there´s an extra smile on people´s faces, knowing that in a few short weeks, Christmas and New year are upon us, and many will re-unite with family and loved ones..
For our “cousins” on the other side of the pond, the USA and Canada, they have just celebrated their Thanksgiving, and to those clients who now live or have homes here, I hope you had a wonderful day.
North American Buyers
Talking about North American “cousins”, there has been a significant increase in the number of homes being bought by US citizens over the last 3 years, with the first semester of 2023 holding the record so far, with 1.339 operations.
It doesn´t seem much in the global scheme of things, but that is a 400% rise since the first semester of 2020, in the midst of the global pandemic, and a 100% rise since the same period in 2021.
There has been a steady increase since the beginning of 2011, which saw a peak, and fall immediately after the global financial crisis in 2009.
There are many reasons given for this increase, some attribute it to the favourable Dollar/Eur exchange, others say the recent removal of tax incentives in Portugal for foreigners.
Some commentators suggest that other fiscal benefits in Spain, such as the “Beckham Law” (Ley de expatriados 687/2005), which gave special incentives to highly qualified individuals who wanted to work or invest in Spain, with our very own David Beckham who opted to take advantage of the law during his time here with Real Madrid football team.
However the biggest increase in numbers seems to be since the pandemic. And this ties in with a global push for many companies, national and international encouraging, and many workers seeking, to work away from the office.
This, together with the new “digital nomad” law (28/2022) in Spain, favouring digital startup companies, has allowed many people to travel to different countries, but continue to work and earn salaries from their home countries.
