A new year, new hope

A happy new year to one and all. I hope everyone was able to enjoy some time off with family and friends.

2023 was a strong year for sales, at least in the first 3 quarters, with a tailing off in the last quarter, with the cost of living taking its toll on consumers, especially during the festive season.

January has started off very active in terms of viewings and we are hopeful that this continues into the year, despite the continued rise in goods prices and the high interest rates.

There are analysts who are predicting a lowering of rates sometime in Spring, suggesting this will re-activate the mortgage market which has suffered a huge blow as a result, and down by approx. 30% year on year by Sept 2023.

Water restrictions

The Junta de Andalucia has issued a warning this month that they may impose water restrictions throughout the region if the current situation doesn’t improve soon.

As we all know, last year saw historic record temperatures across Europe and the world, and Spain, especially Andalucia, suffered equally.

Although there has been a lot of rainfall in January with many reservoirs, at least in the top half of Spain recovering their levels, some areas in Andalucia have still not.

The Junta has said that if it does not rain continuously for at least 30 days, then they will have no choice but to restrict usage to only essential needs. Watering private gardens, filling private pools, washing terraces and cars at home will be restricted.

So we wait with fingers crossed to see if the situation improves before the summer. This takes me back to my childhood in the UK, when water restrictions would be issued if it didn’t rain for more than a week (yes, in rainy UK!!).

It makes me question why the governments don’t spend more money on investing into ways of capturing and storing more of the rain water and flooding that occurs when it does rain, rather than spending it on free train rides and cinema tickets.

Joke of the month

A man is flying in a hot-air balloon and realizes he is lost. He reduces height and spots a man below. He lowers the balloon farther and shouts, “Excuse me! Can you tell me where I am?”

The man below says: “Yes, you’re in a hot-air balloon, hovering 30 feet above this field.”

“You must be an engineer,” says the balloonist.

“I am,” replies the man. “How did you know?”

“Well,” says the balloonist, “everything you have told me is technically correct, but it’s no use to anyone.”

The man below says, “You must be in management.”

“I am,” replies the balloonist, “but how did you know?”

“Well,” says the man, “you don’t know where you are or where you’re going, but you expect me to be able to help. You’re in the same position you were before we met, but now it’s my fault.”
